Children, parental love, families, faith, and health should never be weaponized to enforce laws. That is not who we are, nor who we should aspire to be. To prey on a parent’s love and deepest fears—or to exploit anyone seeking healthcare or spiritual solace—is fundamentally un-American.
This is not a defense of unauthorized immigration. It is an appeal to conscience. Immigration is a complex issue and a legitimate concern for any sovereign nation, but our response must be measured, proportional, and anchored in our foundational values.
While Americans may differ on policy, I believe we share one conviction: we must never become a country that weaponizes children. Regardless of political affiliation, protecting children’s wellbeing and family bonds is a moral line we cannot cross in pursuit of any policy goal, no matter how urgent. Our approach must preserve humanity even as we uphold our laws—a core tenet of ordo amoris, the right ordering of love that places human dignity at the center of justice.
Upholding the rule of law and defending human dignity are not mutually exclusive. We can and must do both. Ensuring schools, hospitals, and churches remain safe spaces for everyone is the smallest yet most essential measure of grace—one we should all hope never to need ourselves.
Amid the many challenges facing our nation, this principle remains clear: every person in our community deserves access to care, learning, and hope—without fear.
